Nailbiter 14 double splash page process

I was really excited when I got the pages for Nailbiter 14. All portion of it takes place underwater, and as I love snorkeling and swimming I was pretty excited too work on these pages. When I saw what Mike Henderson did here I was elated. Here's the break downs of how I tackled pages 10/11 from black and white to full color!
As always I start by laying out the flat colors

Next I add some basic textures and effects I use on Nailbiter along with some lighting/shadows

Finally I add more lighting effects over Mike's Line work to give it a nice underwater vibe!
Nailbiter 14 comes out tomorrow (7/1/15) go check it out some cool easter eggs in there along with a killer plot.

TMNT Color Classics Vol 3 #4 came out yesterday! Really happy to be working on this book I grew up on the Ninja Turtles and more or less learned to draw copying pictures of these radical dudes. It's a huge honor to be working with some of my childhood heroes.

Process

I know it's been forever since I've posted, but I've been working on lots of exciting stuff that I can finally start sharing. One of said things is the coloring duties for Joshua Williamson & Mike Henderson's NAILBITER! Issue 1 hits stands tomorrow (May 7th), I'm really proud of this one so if  a comic that's one part True Detective and one part Twin Peaks sounds like your jam, check it out.

People are often confused as to what exactly I do when I tell them I color comics, so I figured this was a good as time as any to break it down:
After reading the script and looking over the line art, the first step it to get a general idea of the tone of the scene/page that I'm about to do. After that's been determined I break the page up into flat color. Making the jacket blue, the car red, etc.

Next, I start on lighting - adding shadows and highlights. Because of the dark gritty tone of Nailbiter, I add a layer of texture over the whole page to give things a dirty feel. Think David Fincher's, Seven.

Everything I've done up to this point has been behind the line work. Next I add effects over Mike's art: rain, headlights, graffiti, the windshield, along with a few other things. In short, I'm responsible for anything that isn't black on the page. Here's the final page along side everything I've done with out the line art over top.

One more time

I put one more up at Threadless, this one was fun I had the idea and wanted to see how fast I could execute it.  This one took me about an hour I spilled a bunch of India ink on some paper and built out the eyes and mouth in Photoshop. So not a typical illustration like I normally do but I like the way it came out.

Can't leave well enough alone.

Thanks for all your help on the Venom shirt, but I'm too narcotic to leave well enough alone. With the idea of this challenge rattling around in the back of my head I ended up doing a 2nd drawing, and I think this one is arguably better. At any rate help out and 5 this bitch up.

Thanks!

Venom I Want To Eat Your Brains

Hey everybody, I've submitted another one of my drawings to Threadless, this time for the Deadly Foes of Spider-Man challenge. If I win it would be a big help financially as well as a lot of attention for my work. The voting is 1-5 (5 being the best), so if you have time put a 5 on it and it would help a lot.

also sharing this would help a lot too!
THANKS!
