Nailbiter #10 process

I thought it might be fun to show everyone how the sausage is made when it comes to the colors on Nailbiter. I'll be cover page 2/3 of Nailbiter issue 10. We of course start out with Mike Henderson's great line work. along with the script I was asked to add some sunbeams behind the butcher.
1st I break the page up into flats making the boys shirt blue, his hair yellow and so on.

Next I add some details and lighting. Patches of brown in the grass, different color leaves... You'll see I've also added highlights and shadows here.
And finally the sunbeams, all the work I've done to this point has been under Mikes line work. for strong lighting effects like this I'll add a layer above his art work blowing out some of the black creating the strong lighting effect you see here.
Here's the artwork with out mikes line work so you can see what I've on it own

Process

I know it's been forever since I've posted, but I've been working on lots of exciting stuff that I can finally start sharing. One of said things is the coloring duties for Joshua Williamson & Mike Henderson's NAILBITER! Issue 1 hits stands tomorrow (May 7th), I'm really proud of this one so if  a comic that's one part True Detective and one part Twin Peaks sounds like your jam, check it out.

People are often confused as to what exactly I do when I tell them I color comics, so I figured this was a good as time as any to break it down:
After reading the script and looking over the line art, the first step it to get a general idea of the tone of the scene/page that I'm about to do. After that's been determined I break the page up into flat color. Making the jacket blue, the car red, etc.

Next, I start on lighting - adding shadows and highlights. Because of the dark gritty tone of Nailbiter, I add a layer of texture over the whole page to give things a dirty feel. Think David Fincher's, Seven.

Everything I've done up to this point has been behind the line work. Next I add effects over Mike's art: rain, headlights, graffiti, the windshield, along with a few other things. In short, I'm responsible for anything that isn't black on the page. Here's the final page along side everything I've done with out the line art over top.

More Mike

Here's a 3 page project I did with Mike Henderson a few months back. Despite Mike nor I having a full grasp as to what exactly is going on here, I'm really happy with the way these came out. Check out the black and whites over on Mike's site.

Does and Don'ts

Don't ever go to college. Don't become friends with Mike Henderson. Don't decide you want to be a colorist. And definitely, don't try coloring some of the aforementioned Mike's line work... just don't do it. He'll never stop asking you to color his stuff.

Check out the awesome B&W version and lots of other great stuff he'll make me color soon over at:

PS and never ever shake a baby, unless it's filled with salt or pepper.
